Working with Case Managers
Part 4: Share Your Feedback
How can I best share feedback?
Here are some tips to having a productive conversation with your case
manager, particularly if you want to ask them to do something differently.
1. Set a time: Let your case manager know in advance that you have
feedback you want to share. This will help them plan ahead and not have
other important matters they want to talk to you about.
2. Be prepared: Think about what you want to say. You can use the
Feedback-Sharing Worksheet to plan your thoughts. You can also
share a copy of your completed survey. If you do this, you might want to
make a second copy so you both can look at it at once.
3. Be specific in your feedback: Give examples of what you like and what
you want to see. Focus on the case manager’s actions and behaviors, not
their personality. For example, you could say something like, “I really like
it when you [action], but I don’t like it when you [action].”
4. If you want to share something negative, make sure you say
something positive, too. It never feels good to hear only bad things
about yourself. If you’re asking your case manager to do something
differently, also tell them what you like and what you think is going well.
5. Ask them for their ideas on how to improve. Often, your case
manager will have ideas about how they can do better. Ask them what
you can expect going forward. You can write down what you agree on in
the Feedback-Sharing Worksheet.
6. Bring a support person with you. Sometimes, hard conversations are
easier if you don’t have them alone. Think about bringing someone else
with you when you have this conversation. They could help you stay on
track, express your ideas, or mediate if things don’t go as well as you’d
like.
