Finding the right employment service program
Purpose and Background
What is the purpose of this guide?
Finding a job can be difficult for anyone, but it can be even harder when
you’re living with a disability. It is helpful to get some support so you
can find a job that you like and matches your strengths and interests.
This guide is for people with disabilities and their caregivers to assess
programs that help people to reach their employment goals. This guide
will help you choose an employment service program that is a good fit.
Employment services help people:
•
•
•
•
Learn what kinds of jobs they might like or be good at
Find a job in the community
Get help learning the job
Keep the job with support from a job coach
The guide will help you:
•
•
•
Know what questions to ask about a program before you enroll
Think about what kind of help you want
Pick the program that is best for you
Which version of the guide should I use?
We have made two versions of a guide to help you decide. Choose what
works best for you.
•
The Long Version – This version has lots of details, questions to
ask, and space to write notes. It helps you look closely at an
employment service provider.
•
The Short Version – This version has big writing, pictures, and
simple language. It includes 19 questions to ask the staff.
You can also use both versions together. The two versions have similar
questions and are split into the same sections. For example, some
caregivers or case managers may use the detailed information in the
long version to prompt individuals with disabilities to think through and
complete the short version. There is no right or wrong way to use the
tools!
